Summary

Dawson Road Realignment, intersection with Bruce Highway

MCE was engaged to undertake the planning and detailed design for the realignment of the Dawson Road and Bruce Highway (10F) intersection. This is an urban site and included reviewing site constraints including PUP present and environmental impacts of crossing a DAF Waterway to generate several alignment options through which comparisons were made. MCE made recommendations for TMRs approval and implemented the selected option recommended within the report. The design included basic AUL, BAR intersection design encompassing the location of stop lines, design of traffic control device (signs and line marking) layouts using TraSIS and TrasiCAD, per requirements, road pavement runoff and aquaplaning checks and several private accesses to schools and private residences.

MCE undertook 2D hydraulic modelling of the catchment to determine slab link box culvert sizing and calculate scour protection. Environmental considerations at this location completed by MCE were to ensure that it met all DAF Waterway Barrier Requirements.

Several items of PUP that MCE considered in the design were overhead electrical (vertical clearance checks, horizontal checks, all clashes avoided), relocation of Telstra lines, and design of protection culvert and slab over a 660-diameter steel watermain. The design of the protection culvert included detailed construction staging methodologies for a new culvert base slab and RCBCs below and around the watermain and blade walls with relieving slabs to direct loads away from the RCBC and watermain.
